Pueraria Mirifica Clinical Studies

Source : Medical Plant Research Institute Department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand. The plants grow on the territory of forests in the West, the North, and the North East of Thailand. Active components of these plants were discovered in the inter-connected tuberous roots, which resemble a line of round bulbs. The shape and size of the tuberous roots vary and depend on the conditions in which they grow.

The tuber helps to increase and accumulate at least 13 known natural chemicals identified as PHYTOESTROGENS comprising: miroestrol, daidzein, genistin, genistein, B-sitosterol, stigmasterol, coumestrol, pueraria, compesterol, mirificoumestan, kwakhurin and mirificin.

A number of researches related to breast cell lines and the function of Pueraria mirifica in vitro have been organized by the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Phramongkutklao College of Medicine, Bangkok, Thailand. These studies have reported that Pueraria mirifica root extract (Smith Naturals Co Ltd., Bangkok) has a strong effect in the struggle against aggressive cell cancer lines in vitro, especially the proliferative estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer lines (T47-D, MCF-7, and ZR-75-1) obtained from the MD Anderson Cancer Institute (Texas) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Pueraria mirifica improves fibroblasts in normal breast cells and inhibits estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells. According to the study that took place at the School of Medicine, Saint Mariane University, Tokyo, Japan by Kuramoshi, T. and Smitasiri, Y. about the preliminary study of Pueraria mirifica in Japanese females, 50 healthy menstruating volunteer females, in the age of 20 to 49 years, were given by mouth between 100 to 600 mg of Pueraria mirifica root powder as capsules every day during the period of 7 days, two weeks after menstruation. There were no reports of missed or abnormally heavy, severe menstruation found.

Animal Test: There were reports in 1960-61 years from the British researchers in order to test the effects of miroestrol. As a result the estrogenic effects of this chemical were proven.

Human Test: PM root was tested in human and was declared in 1961 to have a potent estrogen effect.
